Since its 2017 release, Fortnite has become Epic Games’ most popular game and one of the best-performing video games ever. But a recent controversy has shaken it to its core. The case is about Fortnite Refund, FTC vs Fortnite, and Epic Games. The game received a $245 million fine for its inconsistent and confusing configuration button, which caused many users to click on the wrong button and make unwanted purchases.
In the case of Fortnite Refund and FTC vs Fortnite and Epic Games, the FTC claimed that users would unintentionally make transactions due to unclear navigation. Players would often receive a charge while the game was still loading, for example, when they woke it from sleep mode. Additionally, they incurred charges when they pressed a button to preview an item.
The Aftermath
The settlement was initially disclosed in December 2022 and finalized in March 2023. The FTC has recently focused on these techniques, commonly called “dark patterns,” in recent months. The Commission published findings about Fortnite’s use of a deceptive tactic and other businesses that exploit customers by employing dark patterns. This deceptive tactic manipulated users into spending money. We wonder if Fortnite’s deception will affect its rumored collaboration with Avatar.
Refunds of over $70 million have been issued to clients who were victims of the wrongful transactions as part of the settlement; additional payments will be disbursed later. Six hundred twenty-nine thousand three hundred forty-four payments were made starting Monday, with half going through cheques and the other half using PayPal. Customers who are impacted have 90 days to redeem their cash checks and 30 days to redeem their PayPal payments. The average amount being paid is about $114. Customers can still file a claim using an online form if they haven’t already.
“Many Fortnite gamers, mostly kids, “racked up unauthorized charges without any parental involvement due to the techniques,” according to the FTC.
The FTC claimed on Monday that gamers of all ages were subjected to unwarranted charges just by pressing a single button because of Fortnite’s manipulative tactic.
The government will continue to accept online claims through at least Jan. 10. The FTC intends to issue additional refunds via check or Paypal at a later, unspecified date.
Refund Eligibility
According to the FTC, you must meet certain criteria to qualify for the Fortnite refund.
- Your child charged your credit card because of the game without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
- If you were charged in the game for items you didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022.
- If your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained about the wrongful charges.
- Customers who filled out and submitted the claim form.
- Lastly, you must be above 18 to complete the claim form. Parents or guardians are also advised to complete the form for their children.
