For avid gamers, it’s no surprise that Concord flooped, which had great potential, ended up being a huge flop. With the launch of Marvel Rivals, its developer had a couple of things to say regarding the success and failure of both games.
A video game developed by NetEase Games in collaboration with Marvel Games. Marvel Rivals and Concord are also hero shooter games. Recently, hero shooter games have been popular for a while, with the release of acclaimed titles like Overwatch and Apex Legends. Think Call of Duty Black Ops 6 but with more focus on character types and environment.
However, the newly introduced and swiftly closed Concord failed to create an impression on the genre, with Overwatch being one of the most well-known games in this category. There were some issues with Concord initially, but a Marvel Rivals developer recently shared his opinions.
Why Concord Flopped and Marvel Rivals Succeeded

“Concord appeared to be in a losing struggle. Divisive character designs, and a high price in a genre usually free-to-play wasn’t helping it. Convincing people to switch from games like Overwatch to a more costly version felt like an uphill struggle given the abundance of hero shooters accessible to play.” Thaddeus Sasser, the director of Marvel Rivals, said on the VideoGamer Podcast.
“As a game developer, you’re always worried until the audience has responded,” Sasser continued.
Sasser further backed his point by saying he didn’t believe anyone could have predicted the flop of Concord, otherwise, the game industry would be different by now. This is because no one wants their game to fail but to succeed spectacularly.
Concord and Marvel Rivals are both hero shooter games, but audiences have been received differently. Concord was a notorious flop, while so far, Marvel Rivals is already a big hit. The game has over 10 million players on its servers in just three days. It’s a massive hit with fans and the developers.
Would Concord Have Succeeded If It Was a Free-To-Play Game?
Probably. Those who had the chance to play Concord before its servers went down actually enjoyed it. However, the fact that the game was in premium mode and had a $40 price tag, unlike Marvel Rivals, that is free to play.
This move by the developers turned out to be a costly error that ultimately cost several enthusiastic developers their jobs. And although there is nothing to rejoice about. It proves that you never know which game will be a hit or a miss. Follow the Stratplays blog for more juicy gaming news.
