The Esports World Cup (EWC) has unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the first official title for its highly anticipated 2025 tournament. Organized by the Esports World Cup Foundation, this global event will spotlight the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise, a fan-favorite first-person shooter. This decision marks a continuation of Call of Duty’s prominent role in the EWC, following the success of Modern Warfare and Warzone in 2024.
The EWC Foundation selected Black Ops 6 to replace Modern Warfare, which played a significant role in last year’s event. In 2024, Atlanta Faze claimed victory in the Modern Warfare tournament, securing a $600,000 (£470,749) prize from a pool of $1.8 million (£1.4 million). Meanwhile, the Warzone competition brought together 21 teams competing for a $1 million (~£784,581) prize. This year, organizers have yet to disclose the prize pool for Black Ops 6, though anticipation remains high given EWC’s reputation for major prizes.
The Story So Far

The Esports World Cup has become a landmark event in esports, gaining international attention with its massive $60 million (~£47 million) total prize pool in 2024. Besides the prize money, the EWC has also introduced the EWC Club Program, an initiative to support 30 esports organizations with funding and opportunities across multiple game titles. This program aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to boost its esports profile through substantial investments in the industry.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund backs the EWC Foundation, as part of the nation’s commitment to its Vision 2030. This includes Saudi investments in key esports assets, like the ESL FACEIT Group and Chinese tournament organizer Hero Esports. While these investments have boosted the EWC’s scale and reach, some critics have raised concerns about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, adding a layer of complexity to its ambitions in esports.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the first confirmed title, fans can expect intense competition, thrilling matches, and a showcase of skill as top players vie for championship glory in 2025.
